Of course, the higher level of education you get, the more you can expect to earn. With higher earnings often comes more responsibility, however. Some information technology systems managers have to be on call around the clock in case of emergency.

Most community colleges and vocational schools offer associates degrees in information technology. Earning an associate degree will help you learn the basics behind computer networking and systems. 4-year bachelor's degrees tend to provide a more in-depth and broad learning experience, and both types of degrees should prepare you for an entry-level IT job. Once employed, many information technology professionals work up the corporate ladder by taking professional certification courses.
