Systems analysts help to implement and perfect an organization's existing technologies, but they may also design new systems, or design and implement new hardware and software. Because systems analysts must work with rapidly changing technologies, they tend to specialize in a specific type of systems that corresponds to their employer. Some systems analysts work with business, financial, or accounting systems, and others with scientific and engineering systems.
The Education of a Systems Analyst
If you're looking for a career as a systems analyst, it helps to have a bachelor's degree or higher in information science, computer science, or the more business oriented study of management information systems (MIS). A master's degree in business administration (MBA) with a concentration in information systems can also put you in high demand. But individuals with non-technology degrees can also find work if they've taken courses in information technology subjects and have good business and interpersonal skills.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, job prospects for computer system analysts are expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations. Industries such as the federal government, state government, insurance carriers, company and enterprise management, and computer systems design are currently employing the greatest number of computer systems analysts.
