With this career, it will be your job to ensure that a company's computers are adequate for day-to-day operations. You will set the standard for the your company's information technology needs and make sure that new technologies are properly implemented.
Getting Your Computer Information Systems Education
Getting a Bachelor's degree in information science, management information systems or computer science is the minimum education expected for this career. Many people who work in this field also have a Master's degree. An internship or other real-world experience may be necessary to show companies that you can manage a complete computer system in a real-world environment.
Working in Information Systems
Most companies today have at least one information system manager to ensure that the company keeps up with current technology and that everything is running smoothly. You will likely have to upgrade the company's computer systems when improved technologies become available, troubleshoot the system and perform regular maintenance. You will also have to ensure that the system is secure enough to safegaurd the company's information and activities.
As a computer information systems professional, you will lead systems analysts, programmers and other employees who work with computers and keep them moving toward the technology goals that you have created. You may have to create new networks and ensure that the company's website is up and running. You will likely install hardware and software, and you may be expected to help workers understand how to use certain aspects of their computers. You may also have to notify employees of changes you've made and help them to understand why upgrades or new systems were needed.
