Those in a computer security job will primarily focus on protecting the network of their organizations. This includes tasks like monitoring for security breaches and ensuring firewalls and encryption programs are used to protect company information. They will usually be responsible for preparing reports on network security, regularly test the network for weaknesses, and do research on trends in security. Most of the time, a computer security expert will also be responsible for developing security standards and will recommend new ways for company information to remain safe.
The top skills that employers look for in those they hire for computer security include analytical and problem-solving skills. Those who are highly detail oriented will also have an advantage in this career path.
Most employers will require a minimum of a bachelor's degree in programming, computer science or a related field. Many schools will now offer degree tracks specifically focused on information security, and it is possible to find bachelor's degrees in computer security. If this is not an option at your college, a well-rounded education in computer studies is typically accepted by employers.
It is important to keep in mind that there are a fair number of employers who prefer employees who have earned a master's in information systems. These programs will typically take an additional two years of study following the bachelor's degree program. Though licenses and certification are generally not required, some employers will also prefer them.
