There are a number of job titles that can fall under the category of a computer technician career, and what you might do will depend on where you work. Some computer technicians, for instance, will work in offices and be in charge of computer support. These technicians will help co-workers with computer problems, will update company software, monitor the network and train employees on the use of computers. Other computer technicians might work for a company that tests and installs networks, troubleshoots networks and performs network maintenance. Computer technicians work for all types of companies; they may work for government, businesses, non-profits, or even schools.
The skills and education needed to become a computer technician will vary based on the type of work you wish to do. You don't, however, necessarily need a bachelor's degree. If you are interested in computer support, you may want to take courses at a community college where you will learn the basics of computer systems. Some companies, like those who hire network support specialists, will usually require an associate's degree and some will prefer a bachelor's degree.
Larger companies that hire computer technicians will often want employees who have a bachelor's degree in areas like computer engineering, computer science or information science. In addition, since computer technology changes so frequently, it is a good idea to take continuing education courses throughout your career as a computer technician.
