About a Computer Hardware Career
Computer hardware engineers develop the devices that make our society run. They may work on any devices that are involved with computer systems. This includes motherboards and other internal parts of computers, peripheral devices, and networking systems. Some may work on servers and processors in industry. Others work to perfect user level things like touch screen devices, keyboards or monitors.
A computer hardware engineer may find his or her calling designing the microcircuits found on every motherboard. Others may design larger parts of devices. Still others work to improve the functionality or comfort of users' devices.
In a computer hardware career you will be spending plenty of your time working with design programs and blue prints to better designs. You will also be involved with testing and refining your designs and working with others to create the best hardware that you can. If you are more interested in the hands on approach, then you may be involved in the installation and maintenance of computer hardware. It is a competitive career but a well paying line of work for a skilled engineer.

Education for Success
Today, many computer hardware career opportunities face severe competition from overseas companies. While jobs are often competitive, an advanced education will help to level the field. You will need at least a bachelors in a field like electronics, electrical systems, computer systems, mechanical engineering, manufacturing or computer-aided drawing (CAD) and information technology. In many cases, a more advanced degree or additional training will be necessary to advance in this field.
